The Weeknd never spilled secrets about Selena Gomez, despite a story from exactly one year ago today. At the time, Gossip Cop corrected a claim about how Gomez was nervous the “Starboy” singer was going to dish about their past romance in an interview. A full 365 days have now passed, and it’s clear the report was false then and remains so to this day.
On November 20, 2017, RadarOnline alleged Gomez was scared The Weeknd was going to give an interview, with the intent to “exact revenge” on her. In an attempt to lend credence to its article, the site quoted an anonymous source who maintained The Weeknd was feeling “vengeful” and “angry.” And, according to the blog, he believed the best way to help himself heal would be to go “public.”
When the story first came out, Gossip Cop reached out to a Gomez confidante, who assured us she was not remotely nervous about The Weeknd doing an interview about their relationship. We were told there was nothing scandalous to their breakup. Simply, the distance and time they spent apart led their romance to fizzle out. Also, as widely reported, The Weeknd broke up with Gomez, and so it makes no sense that he would be “on the warpath,” as falsely contended by the site.
And while The Weeknd later released an EP titled My Dear Melancholy that seemingly referenced Gomez, it was by no means “vengeful.” Regardless, the site’s article about Gomez being “terrified” The Weeknd would do a tell-all interview was 100 percent wrong 12 months ago, and it’s clear it’s still not true. In fact, her rep also went on the record to tell Gossip Cop the premise was complete “nonsense.”
In the intervening year, RadarOnline has not gotten much better with its reporting about Gomez. In April, for example, Gossip Cop busted the blog when it inaccurately claimed Gomez and Justin Theroux were exchanging “flirty” texts after his split from Jennifer Aniston. Not only was that wholly untrue, but so too was the site’s story the following month that incorrectly asserted Gomez told Bella Hadid to “dump” The Weeknd after he reunited with the model.
Gossip Cop occasionally looks back at stories from a year ago to show how they’ve held up over time. It’s not to pat ourselves on the back. Rather, it’s to help inform our readers what to look for when trying to suss out what’s fact and what’s fiction.
